Alyssa and Maddie, both occupational therapy students at Regis College, are embarking on a meaningful volunteer journey to support children and young adults with disabilities at Mustard Seed Communities in Jamaica. This Catholic based, under-resourced orphanage is home to the young residents who could greatly benefit from sensory tools and techniques. Our mission as student volunteers is to provide these essential resources and educate their caregivers on how to use them effectively.

We plan to bring items like headphones, swings, and tactile-supported toys, which are crucial for helping children and young adults self-regulate so they are able to fully participate in daily activities. These tools will enable them to engage in play and social participation while learning in ways that best support their individual needs. Additionally, the caregivers are in need of at least 1 laptop to accurately document each residents daily vitals, medications, and other health related information as their current source of documentation is pen and paper.

During our mission trip this coming August, we will conduct sensory education modules for the caregivers, demonstrating the use of sensory tools and teaching them to recognize signs that indicate a child's specific need. We will also spend quality time with the residents through games, reading, and participating in daily worship and prayer. Our goal is to create a supportive and nurturing environment that enhances the children and young adults quality of life. We are seeking support to cover travel expenses and purchase the necessary sensory tools and caregiver technology to make this mission a success.
