In the last few days, our community experienced unimaginable tragedy when the river at Camp Mystic—just outside Kerrville and Hunt, TX—rose 25 feet in just 45 minutes, washing away cabins filled with 8-year-old girls. Many have already heard of the heartbreak and loss, but I want to share a story of courage, selflessness, and true heroism.
Among the first on the scene were the brave volunteers of the Mountain Home Fire Department. Despite impossible conditions, they mobilized quickly to help in search and rescue efforts. During devastation and rising floodwaters one team hiked eight miles through thick, knee-deep mud to reach the camp and assist the girls who were still trapped.
The outcome was both tragic and miraculous. While some precious lives were lost, over 700 girls were safely evacuated and reunited with their families—all thanks to the tireless, around-the-clock efforts of volunteer firefighters and emergency responders. These men and women faced unimaginable scenes: riverside campgrounds swept away in minutes, families in tents and RVs overtaken by the flood, entire communities forever changed.
One striking detail mentioned by the governor: a first responder’s truck was swept away by the flood. That truck belonged to the Mountain Home Fire Department and was valued at $75,000—dedicated solely to rescue work, and now completely gone. And yet, even after such personal losses, these volunteers remain on the ground, still serving, still giving.
The Mountain Home Fire Department is 100% volunteer. They don’t receive the kind of funding or support that larger city departments might have—but what they lack in resources, they more than make up for in heart, grit, and courage.
Every bit helps. Please share, support, and continue to lift this community—and all the firefighters and volunteers—in your prayers.
Transparency Statement:
Hi, my name is Hannah Block, and I’m from Kerrville, Texas. I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of the Mountain Home Volunteer Fire Department, where my husband serves as a volunteer firefighter and member of their swift water rescue team.
All funds raised will go directly to Mountain Home FD to help replace rescue equipment lost in the recent flood, including a $75,000 rescue truck and additional swift water gear. If possible, remaining funds will help expand their resources to better respond to future emergencies. I will personally oversee the transfer of all donations to the department and ensure they are used exactly as stated.
