My name is Laila Alkhouri, and I along with my siblings are starting this GoFundMe page to help our parents, Bishara Alkhouri and Mai Alkhouri, manage their financial hardship after escaping the war in Gaza. Our plan is to transfer the funds we raise here to our parents' newly-established Australian bank account.

Bishara and Mai's Story

They fled their home in Gaza City with minutes to spare before their neighborhood was bombed and their lives were turned upside down forever. Bishara and Mai sought refuge with hundreds of others at the ancient Church of St. Porphyrius, where their family has worshiped for decades. For five long weeks, they endured harsh conditions and meager rations of food and water as bombs fell around them. After part of the church was bombed and 18 died, Bishara helped find people trapped under the rubble. They lost many extended family members and friends in the war since Oct. 7.

Finally, on Nov. 20, they made the long and terrifying walk several miles to the southern border with Egypt. They walked with over 10,000 others along war-torn streets, past the injured and the dead, around deep trenches where bombs fell, past crying children and wailing mothers, past tanks and soldiers with guns. They passed many children who seemed lost and alone. With Australian visas in their hands -- thanks to their oldest daughter who became a citizen there just last year -- they fled Gaza with only the clothes on their backs.

Now, they have nothing.

Bishara and Mai are fortunate that they have four young adult children who they encouraged to leave Gaza to further their education. Their oldest daughter, Laila, has taken them into her modest apartment in Sydney, Australia. Their son Fouad lives in Denver and recently began a professional job with a modest income, their daughter Nicole is studying in Boston, and daughter Dana is studying in Egypt.

The five weeks their parents were trapped in their church were the longest of their young lives. Laila, Fouad, Nicole and Dana endured sleepless nights and long days of anxiety as they tried to stay in touch with their parents during communication blackouts and news of so many people they knew suffering and dying. As their parents had encouraged them to leave Gaza for a better life, now the children pleaded with their parents to leave Gaza.

They are eternally grateful their parents survived. But now, the hard work begins of trying to find the resources to support them, since they are all young and still working towards their own independence and building their lives. When you start with nothing, it is daunting to figure out how to buy clothes, personal items and food, and to pay for housing, transportation and other daily expenses. Their parents hope to find work. But the coming months and first year or two will be very challenging for all.

These funds will be used to secure temporary housing, provide essential clothing and hygiene items, cover medical expenses, and take English courses. About Bishara and Mai

Bishara and Mai, both natives of Gaza, built a life of resilience and community in the face of challenging circumstances. Bishara, having studied IT in Germany, returned to Gaza in 1997 inspired by the potential of the Oslo Peace Accords. He embarked on a fulfilling journey, marrying Mai and raising their four children – Laila, Fouad, Nicole, and Dana. With a Ph.D. in IT, Bishara not only dedicated himself to a career but also generously invested his spare time assisting Ph.D. students with their dissertations, contributing to the academic growth of others. Meanwhile, Mai, primarily a devoted homemaker, found purpose in supporting activities at the Gaza City YMCA. She passionately engaged in initiatives aimed at helping children recover from trauma through creative outlets like drawing and painting. The couple were devoted to their Christian community, finding solace and refuge within the ancient walls of St. Porphyrius Greek Orthodox Church. Their commitment to family, education, and community service formed the bedrock of a life that transcended the challenges of their homeland, embodying resilience and a shared dedication to creating positive change in the lives of those around them.

رغم ذلك اليقين، استمرت رغبة مي وبشارة بالبقاء، شأنهم شأن المئات الذين هرعوا معهم خوفاً من القصف التالي، للجوء إلى كنيسة القديس بورفيريوس القديمة، والتي تعبّدت فيها أسرة مي وبشارة لعقود، نالت من خلالها الشعور بالرضى والاطمئنان. إلا أن هذه المشاعر لم تكن متواجدة خلال الخمسة أسابيع التالية، فقد تحمل مي وبشارة ومن معهم ظروفاً قاسيةً يعرق لها الجبين، أقلها بالنسبةِ لهم، قِلة الماء والمأكل وكثرة القصف. فلم يسلم 18 شخصاً رافقوا مي وبشارة في الاحتماء في الكنيسة من القصف. حيث دُمر جزءاً منها، وقُتل جزءاً منهم. ورغم هول الموقف ووحشيته، ورغم ساعات الليل الحالكة دون كهرباء، حاول بشارة ورفاقه البحث عن الأشخاص المدفونين تحت الأنقاض. للأسف، فقد بشارة ومي وأبنائهم -ولا زالوا يفقدون العديد من الأهل والأصدقاء في الحرب منذ 7 أكتوبر وخلال قصف الكنيسة.

منذ ١٩ أكتوبر، ذلك اليوم المؤلم والبشع، وقبله باثني عشر يوم، لم يذق مي وبشارة شعور الراحة، أو النوم المستمر، أو الغذاء الكافي. لشهرٍ كامل اضطروا ومن معهم أن يكابدوا ويشهدوا أسوء الحروب التي مرت على قطاع غزة، وأن يفقدوا صبرهم وأهلهم واحدٍ تلو الآخر. حتى تاريخ ٢٠ نوفمبر، والذي أُذن لهم فيه بالتحرك مشياً على الأقدام لمسافة طويلة استهلكت ٦ ساعات من قوتهم الجسدية والنفسية، حتى وصلوا إلى الحدود الجنوبية مع مصر. بمعية أكثر من ١٠,٠٠٠ نازح، سارت مي وبشارة على الشوارع التي مزقتها الحرب. مروراً بالجرحى والقتلى على جانب الطريق و الخنادق التي حفرتها القنابل، وبالأطفال والأمهات الذين ينوحون، وبالدبابات والجنود الذين صوبوا بنادقهم باتجاههم وأطلقوا النار من بعد التصويب.

أيامٍ قضوها وهم في حالة انتظارٍ لما هو ليس بقادم، حتى أن بشّرتهم ابنتهما الكبرى التي أصبحت مواطنة في استراليا العام الماضي بإمكانية حصولهما على التأشيرات الأسترالية - وما أن سمحت الظروف حتى غادرا غزة حاملين معهم ما كانا يرتديانه.

الآن، ليس لدى مي وبشارة أي شيء، سوى ملابسهما وذكريات المنزل والكنيسة وغزة.
