Otto Bonthius is a bright, loving, and adventurous 3-year-old who brings joy to everyone who knows him. His parents, Jonathan Bonthius and Kaila Bearup, recently received devastating news about their son.

Otto was diagnosed with PFA ependymoma, a form of cancer near his brainstem. On February 10, 2026, he underwent surgery, and the surgeon was able to remove nearly all of the tumor. He is currently in the ICU and will need a few more surgical procedures over the coming weeks before he can go home. Starting in early March, Otto will begin radiation therapy, followed by chemotherapy. Though the road ahead is long and there is a risk of recurrence, his doctors have a clear treatment plan and are hopeful about his recovery. Otto is receiving care at Seattle Children’s Hospital, one of the top pediatric hospitals in the country, and his family remains optimistic about the road ahead.

While Otto's parents are fortunate to have insurance, the financial burden of out-of-pocket costs and other expenses that insurance doesn't cover will continue to accumulate throughout the months of treatment ahead. We are reaching out to help cover medical costs, time away from work, and other unforeseen expenses related to his ongoing care.
