For my birthday this year, I’m raising funds to help OPT-In Kiana send twelve youth ages ten to seventeen accompanied by Elders and chaperones to Anchorage for the Elders and Youth Conference sponsored by First Alaskans. This trip is a unique opportunity for our Katyaagmii Dancers and Interns to share their Inupiaq culture through dance, outreach, and leadership. Our Interns organize conferences, mentor younger youth, and help spread the OPT-In Kiana vision: that "All youth make positive contributions to their community." The Dancers and Drummers lead practices and keep our traditions alive, inspiring others with their dedication and talent.
This journey is more than just travel—it’s a chance for our youth to represent Kiana, learn from Elders, and connect with other Alaska Native leaders. OPT-In Kiana was founded by Ivory Gerhardt-Cyrus when she was 16 years old. Today, half our board and half of our staff are former OPT-In Kiana Youth. Their commitment shows what’s possible when young people are empowered. We have some support from local organizations and grants, but we still need help to cover travel expenses for everyone making the trip.
With only three weeks until departure, our youth are working hard with coffee sales and other fundraisers, but we need additional support to make this experience possible. Your contribution will help ensure these young leaders can attend the conference, share their culture and the OPT-In Kiana Vision, and continue building a brighter future for our community.
