My name is O’Keffe Spencer, and I was born and raised in Jamaica. I migrated to the US when I was 17 years old, became a Citizen and served in the US Military for 20 years before retiring as a Lieutenant. I am deeply proud of my service, but Jamaica will always be part of me. The aftermath of Hurricane Melissa has created devastation for my Jamaican family in Montego Bay, St. James, Hanover, and St. Elizabeth. Since the hurricane struck, I have tried desperately to contact my uncles, aunties, cousins, neighbors, and friends. Thankfully, everyone in my family is safe, but they have been left with no electricity or internet service, and they have a lot of work ahead as they begin to rebuild.

My communication with my family has been very limited, but they have shared their desperate need for food, water and fuel. My uncle told me they really need a generator, as they are not expected to get power again until the end of January. A generator would help the rebuilding work that lies ahead, as well as provide refrigeration for food and power to purify water.

I plan on going to Jamaica within the next few weeks, and I am seeking funds to purchase and ship these much needed supplies:

I also hope to be able to make a contribution towards repairs at two local schools: Cornwall College, my Alma Mater, and Hopewell High School, where my cousin currently attends.

I appreciate all of you who have reached out to me and inquired about my family’s safety and well-being after this devastating hurricane. I am thankful they are all alive and well, but there is much work to be done to rebuild.
