Every year in August, more than 20+ physician assistant students from Orlando organize a medical mission trip with a non-profit organization, Hands of Esperanza, to bring healthcare and education to underserved communities in Guatemala.

For one week, our team of students and preceptors travels to remote, indigenous areas in the Alta Verapaz region, where access to medical care is scarce. Many of our patients walk hours—sometimes days—to reach local clinics, often while managing chronic conditions or painful injuries. During our time there, we’ll provide much-needed medical care, health education, and preventive services to help improve the overall well-being of these resilient communities.

In addition to clinical care, we’ll take part in public health projects designed to prevent illness and promote sustainable living. These include installing ventilated wood-burning stoves to reduce smoke inhalation, setting up water filtration systems to provide clean drinking water, and conducting patient education workshops to support long-term health.

Hands of Esperanza is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit dedicated to serving rural Guatemalan populations. Since 2015, the organization has worked with local Guatemalan service organizations dedicated to allocating resources both locally and internationally to provide healthcare to hundreds of patients each year through mobile clinics.
