Graduating from high school is a milestone that marks years of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. For one recent graduate of North Stafford High School in Stafford, Virginia, this long-awaited moment came with an unexpected challenge.

Throughout high school, he balanced his studies with a job at Walmart to help support himself. As graduation day approached, he followed the proper steps—submitting a request for time off so he could walk across the stage with his classmates. Unfortunately, his manager denied the request. Faced with an impossible decision, he chose what mattered most: celebrating his achievement and the culmination of years of effort. He attended his graduation and missed his shift.

Walmart uses a point-based attendance system to monitor and manage employee attendance and punctuality. Under this policy, an unexcused absence for an entire shift results in a one-point penalty. Because he missed his shift to attend graduation, he was docked an entire point which is essentially a demotion at work, despite the significance of the occasion and his advance notice.

It’s important to note that some employers, like Chick-fil-A, Mission BBQ, and Target, celebrate and support their employees who graduate from high school. This contrast highlights the need for our community to step up and show support when it’s needed most.

This fundraiser is an opportunity for our community to encourage a young person who made a brave decision to honor his hard work and dedication to his studies. By coming together, we can let him know that his achievements matter and that he is valued beyond his job title.
