The NKWA Foundation is dedicated to sustainable community development, health promotion, and supporting rural education in Ghana's Central Region.

Our latest initiative, the NKWA Snail Farming Project, reflects our commitment to empowering local communities and creating a brighter future.

Empowering Young Men and Women through Agricultural Skills.
The NKWA Snail Farming Project is dedicated to making a positive impact on the lives of 5 young men and 5 women in our community. We provide them with comprehensive training and mentorship in snail farming, equipping them with the skills needed to become self-employed entrepreneurs.

Our vision is to excel in every aspect of farming. With our previous Catfish Initiative, we successfully trained 6 individuals; 4 of them have already launched their own catfish farms, while the remaining 2 are in the process of setting up their logistics to begin.

We have secured buyers who will promote and sell the catfish at various Afahye festivity events in Ghana, helping to boost local businesses and create market opportunities.

Our Goals:
  • Skill Development: Provide young individuals with the training and knowledge to excel in aquaculture, specifically in snail farming.
  • Reducing Unemployment: Tackle youth unemployment by creating sustainable job opportunities in the snail farming industry.
  • Community Empowerment: Strengthen the economic and social fabric of Cape Coast by supporting and nurturing aspiring snail farming entrepreneurs.

Snail farming in Ghana is a growing and profitable agricultural business that offers great opportunities for income generation due to its low startup costs. With a strong demand locally and globally, especially in the cosmetic industry, snail farming presents a viable venture. Snails are not only valued for their unique taste but also for their rich nutritional profile. They are high in protein, iron, calcium, magnesium, and vitamin A, while being low in fat. Given their high iron content, snails could help address anemia, a prevalent issue in Ghana, particularly among young children.

We plan to develop resources for the production and processing of snails for various commercial purposes, including meat, education, research, conservation, and even gaming. Our target markets include hotels, fast food outlets, individual households, and the cosmetics industry. In the long term, we aim to expand into the export market.

Youth unemployment and job insecurity are significant challenges in Ghana. Many young people lack the capital needed to start their own businesses, which is why we are raising funds to provide participants with the materials they need to launch this new venture. The NKWA Foundation is committed to following global best practices in this project to maximize impact and results.

Our research shows that many snail farming operations neglect the importance of building partnerships with reputable organizations, such as hotels, fast food chains, and research institutions, where processed snails are in demand for various uses. Additionally, indigenous snails could be sold to museums and research institutions for conservation, academic studies, and other mutually beneficial purposes. We also see potential in exploring consultation, education, and gaming opportunities related to snail farming.

The NKWA Snail Farms will be located in Wiamoah on a plot of land measuring 80ft x 80ft. We have chosen this location because of its high population density, excellent road network, proximity to markets, and reliable security, all of which will help ensure strong business performance. The farm will be divided into three main sections: administrative, processing, and farming. The entire area will be fenced and secured to protect the snails from predators.

The Snail Farming Project aims to train and equip 10 to 15 women and youth within the first 2 to 3 years of operation. It will also ensure reliable delivery services, with a focus on producing high-quality products that meet strict standards, setting them apart in the market.
