Hello my name is Nina and my family and I are in need of help. I will try to keep this as short as I can.
We moved into an income based apartments September 2024. At first things were going good but after less than a week a gas leak occurred. After two weeks of searching they found the leak inside of a wall but then our pilot light kept going out and beside our gas water heater was our a/c unit. I noticed our light bill was rather high for us and after maintenance came and relit the pilot light it went out again. Then at the same time my oldest son heard water running from the return and I open the closet door and look under a/c and there was a very large paint roller pan overflowing with water from the a/c and a board had been taped to the underside of the a/c but due to condensation from the a/c it had warped the board and was barely hanging on so most of my air was coming out from the bottom of the a/c and as a result it was blowing out the piolet light. We finally got maintenance to fix the issue. They took a thin piece of metal and taped it and installed a drainage pipe. All seemed well then we got a lot of rain and our master bathroom started leaking around the door frame. I notified the office and the lady told me it was probably from the a/c vent but I told her the vent is on the other wall. Maintenance came and looked and said yup, it's leaking and we never heard anymore. It continued to leak. The exhaust fan above the toilet fell out of the ceiling and landed on me and left bruises but they knew it wasn't working as we were waiting on a part to come in the mail to fix it and it finally fell. We had other issues like maintenance coming in unexpectedly anytime they wanted and even left their copy of our apartment keys in our door for anyone to walk by and steal. Finally after many other things my family and I started getting sick. My fiance had just started a new job making $19hr and things were looking up for us and we wasn't struggling like we were. Suddenly due to exhaustion of a non-stop fussy baby over 2-3 days and having him at the doctor just 15mins before for ear infections and a cough, runny nose and congestion we were headed to pick up medicine and it had been raining but not at the time I hydroplaned and lost control of the car going 35mph. Thankfully no one was hurt. No other vehicles were harmed but after 2 weeks we were notified the car was a total loss and after accepting their decision they no longer pay for a rental. They sent the finance company a pay off check snail mail which took almost 3 weeks. By this time we have paid $1000 just to have a car to get my fiance back and forth to work while we all were getting sicker. We tried to finance another car but because the finance company hadn't received the check no place would give us another loan because we already had a car loan. Out of desperation we went to a buy here pay here where we went from $367.00 a month to over $800 a month for a 2015 vehicle. At the time my fiance was making decent money plus tips were very good there we could cover it. But by this time my youngest was on 3 different antibiotics because they just wasn't working and he'd get better then it would rebound. My fiance who has asthma also got very sick and ended up with bronchial pneumonia and missed work and had to go to the doctor plus the ER. He also was on 3 different antibiotics plus steroids. Me and my older son also went to the ER with breathing issues. We all had inhalers and breathing treatments. We would get better then it would start over. Finally for small reasons like my fiance didn't replace the bags to the fountain drinks 1 time at work they fired him. I believe it was due to him coughing so much around customers and food. Plus he was having to excuse himself to the office for a breathing treatments and they clearly didn't like it as the other coworkers complained. He couldn't breathe and tried his best to not even take it at work. ( he's had bad asthma since a child) during this time I've had a lot of issues that I don't think is related to the sickness but I have lost almost all the feeling in my hands and have numbing, tingling and pain in my hands, feet and pins and needles up my arms to my shoulders. My hands won't open when i first wake up. My feet started swelling for whatever reason and now i wheeze over every movement. My gums are sore, inflamed and my teeth suddenly hurt after not having any issues before getting pregnant. I have strange fatigue where i can't hold my eyes open and pass out. I can't open jars, i have a hard time caring for my son due to not being able to feel my hands. It's hard to type this as well. I lose grip of everything. I can't stand for more than 20 mins without pain in my lower back and feet and then my feet begin to swell. Those are just the tip of my issues. I was tested for RA but didn't have a high enough number so they have referred me to a rheumatologist which I see September 15th. My regular care doctor took blood and my inflammation levels are very high and they don't know why. They're pointing to possibly more than 1 autoimmune disease but no offical diagnosis yet.I have more frequent migraines. I gained a ton of weight after losing all the baby weight after my son was born. So during all of this sickness and going through my issues we got behind 1 month of rent and my fiance asked for an extension and the office lady replied, if you can't pay get out! We have people standing in line who can. My fiance was just beside himself. Out of all the places he has lived and so have I no place has ever been so rude and heartless. He asked, please? I have kids. She said they'd be filing an eviction if not paid. We called lawyers to fight it and rental assistance programs with no luck from either. My fiance was out of work a week searching for a job but no one was calling back so out of desperation he got a pizza delivery job. Only problem is people don't tip like they used to and so it was costing him more to just have the job. Luckily they moved him up but he only makes $12.50hr being assistant manager. We got behind on all bills. We couldn't even pay his insurance premiums and now he has none of his heart meds for afib, diabetes or his asthma meds. We had to choose the car and food over everything else. So now we have been served eviction and we're all still sick for 3 months and I'm trying to put the puzzle together in my mind and the a/c issue came to mind. It's in our lease they have to be the ones to change the a/c filter which they done two times in 9 months. The return is screwed shut so I wanted to see it! We took the grate off and there it is black mold ( the picture doesn't do it justice but the video of up close shows how bad it really is) so then i check the vent in the dining area as it's tied to the closet where the a/c is and not only did it have the normal screws they had glued it shut! There's black mold there too. So we informed the office and they ignored us because in 4 days we had eviction court. We tried to show the judge everything and he cut us off and said we aren't here for that. We're here only about the money. He was very unkind and rushing us out. He said he didn't want to hear our story because everyone he sees has the same one and we had 7 days to vacate. We had to leave behind so much because it rained and flooded our area. I left behind so much I was hanging onto from my childhood that had sentimental value I was going to pass down to my youngest. So, we are now at a motel that costs $55 a night with 2 kids. We have ramen to eat and bit of sandwich making stuff. My 1yr old has just a few Gerber microwave meals left and we have no money to do laundry, buy food much less apply for places to live. We have to leave this Thursday at 11am if we can't get more money to stay. We will have to live in our car. BTW I called the health department about the mold and they said to call environmental and they said it's between tenant and landlord. I also called DHR who have me resources but even those don't call back or leads to dead ends or wait lists a mile long. We had bad flooding here around our eviction day so other families are displaced making it harder to get a new place. With a eviction on us it's basically rental su!c!de because now we're labeled as bad tenants. I'm asking for 2,500.00. I know it's a lot but we have a car payment every 2 weeks plus monthly car insurance which is almost $200. We applied 3 places before moving and one complex was flooded and destroyed and the other two has a waiting list. 2,500.00 is helping with application fees, deposits, first months rent and turning on power and water again. That's assuming we find a place to rent for $1,000.00. If you have read this until the end i appreciate your time! I felt like you had to know how one thing set this all in motion. Please help so I can get my family back in a home where I can cook them real meals and have clean clothes again. We are so grateful for the motel but it's not home and my 1yr old and teen crave space. My family (Brandon, Aiden,Corey, Darla (our dog) and I )wish whoever reads this lot's of love, light and laughter in your life! May you all be happy and healthy.
Thanks for your time!
Nina
