Stacy is raising funds for the Not in Our BESSt Interest Committee's legal fees, led by the neighborhood committee leader, who has been helping organize local residents in the Town of New Scotland as they work together to protect the community they call home. Their community has been fighting the proposed placement of a commercial lithium-ion battery storage project on Wormer Road, a residential neighborhood in the Town of New Scotland. Residents in the Town of New Scotland have reached a critical and increasingly costly stage in this fight, with legal fees mounting, and support is urgently needed.
The proposed project consists of six 30-foot-long industrial storage containers filled with lithium-ion batteries. The site would be located on Wormer Road, a residential neighborhood in the Town of New Scotland, approximately 150 feet from neighboring property lines and surrounded by homes and private wells. Funds raised will help cover the legal expenses, signs, and flyers needed to continue challenging this project and informing neighbors. Residents strongly believe that industrial-scale battery storage does not belong this close to homes. Lithium-ion battery systems present unique risks, including fire, thermal runaway, and the potential release of hazardous gases. With homes relying on private wells and limited water availability in the area, there are also serious concerns about environmental impacts and local emergency response capabilities should an incident occur.
As battery energy storage expands across New York State, more neighborhoods could face similar proposals. The approval of this site could set a dangerous precedent for future projects, making this fight especially urgent not only for the Town of New Scotland, but for communities across New York. Every donation, no matter the amount, will help the Not in Our BESSt Interest Committee continue this legal fight and protect the safety of local families, homes, wildlife, and the natural beauty of Wormer Road, a residential neighborhood in the Town of New Scotland. If you are able to give or share this fundraiser, your support will truly mean so much to the neighbors standing together for Wormer Road and the future of the Town of New Scotland.
