Hi, my name is Ugonwa, I am an optometrist, a primary health care provider in Eye health with 16years of active practice, currently volunteering with a local primary health facility in a remote area in Nigeria.

My mission and passion is to deliver quality, affordable and accessible eye care for the community. For the past nine years in this facility and with the little equipments that I have, I have been able to touch lives, restore sight to the hopeless and put smiles on the faces of people in my community, but this comes with a lot of challenges, particularly lack of standard equipments that can seamlessly diagnose eye issues.

It is worthy to note that currently the major cause of Blindness in Nigeria is cataract which is estimated at about 43% followed by glaucoma.In 2020, Nigeria estimated 1.3 million people were blind and 24 million had vision loss. A further 50 million people had non-vision impairing eye conditions. Specifically, the Nigerian Optometric Association reported nearly 7 million Nigerians were blind in 2022. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness estimated 1.13 million individuals aged 40 or above were blind in Nigeria.

These diseases can be avoided with early detection through proper eye diagnosis. But in a community like mine we have almost zero access to affordable eye care.

My mission is to make standard eye care available.

with the increasing cases of common avoidable blindness, it has been a struggle to provide more diagnosis especially in the areas of age related eye diseases such as, glaucoma, diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy, cataract etc. These eye diseases can be totally avoided with early diagnosis.

These equipments comes at a high cost but very necessary for our mission.
