Hi everyone! My name is Lauren and I am a third-year student midwife at Plymouth University, and in July-August 2025, I have the incredible opportunity to complete a midwifery placement in Kandy, Sri Lanka! This is more than just a placement to me - it's a chance to make a real difference in maternal healthcare while learning from midwives in a completely different culture and setting.
In Sri Lanka, maternity services face immense challenges. Overcrowded wards, a lack of resources, and shortages of basic supplies mean midwives must work under extreme pressure to provide the best possible care. While Sri Lanka has a strong commitment to maternal and neonatal health, the healthcare system operates with fewer resources compared to the UK, where technology and funding are more readily available. Many women give birth in difficult conditions in Sri Lanka, without some of the comforts and medical provisions that we have in the UK.
I feel so privileged to be entering a profession dedicated to empowering and supporting women through one of the most important moments of their lives. This placement will allow me to bring my passion, skills, and compassion to a setting where I hope to make a meaningful impact and grow into the midwife I aspire to be.
How You Wonderful People Can Help. . .
As a full-time healthcare student with over 2,000 hours of unpaid clinical experience (so far), balancing paid work alongside my studies is incredibly difficult. I'm doing all that I can to fund this opportunity - including working part time on my days off - but to make this elective a reality, I need all the support I can get!
Here's an outline of the costs:
- Placement Fee (Work the World) - £2,450
- Flights & Travel/Indemnity Insurance - £1,250
- Vaccinations & Health Prep - £300
- Accommodation & Living Expenses - £600
❗️TOTAL = £4,600❗️
I understand times are tough for many, but if you feel you can support me by sharing this page or providing a donation - even just a few pounds - I would be so incredibly grateful!
Your kindness won't just help me - it will support mothers, babies, and midwives in Sri Lanka who work tirelessly with so little ♥
[ GIVING BACK ❣️]
As a thank you for this opportunity, I will also be donating essential resources to the hospital, including • sterile dressings, • gloves, and • antiseptics - all of which have already been generously covered thanks to £300 of the donations on this page! THANK YOU ❣️. . .
Thank you so much for reading and being a part of this journey. Your support means the world - and stay tuned for updates/photo's along the way!
With heartfelt thanks,
Lauren x
**If, for any reason, I am unable to undertake this placement, I will ensure that the donated funds are either used to purchase & transport essential supplies to the communities in need - or - the funds can be returned to the generous donors.
