Our Story

Across the country, many of the stories, voices, and contributions of African Americans are becoming harder to find in schools, libraries, and public conversations. Programs focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion are being reduced or eliminated. Black history courses and cultural programs face increasing challenges, and many families worry that future generations will grow up knowing less about the struggles, resilience, creativity, and achievements of those who came before them.

At Msanii Creative Expressions, we believe that when history is silenced, art can keep it alive.

For generations, African Americans have preserved history, wisdom, and hope through creative expression. During slavery, spirituals carried messages of faith, courage, and sometimes even directions to freedom. Stories were passed from one generation to the next through song, dance, poetry, drumming, and spoken word. Long before history books recorded our experiences, our ancestors used the arts to remember, teach, heal, and unite communities.

Today, we continue that tradition.

Msanii Creative Expressions is a community-centered arts initiative that uses poetry, storytelling, theater, music, and cultural education to preserve African American history and strengthen community connections. Through programs such as Say It Loud Poetry Night, reader's theater productions like Voices of the Enslaved and the Free: The Road to Juneteenth, cultural celebrations, youth activities, and community conversations, we create spaces where stories can be shared, remembered, and celebrated.

We believe that art is more than entertainment—it is education, healing, and preservation. When a poem is read, a story is performed, a drum is played, or a community gathers to remember its history, culture remains alive.

Your support helps us provide free and low-cost programs, compensate local artists, develop educational performances, purchase materials, rent community venues, and ensure that these important stories continue to reach future generations.
