The Reality in San Diego
- Over 20,000 students in San Diego County experience homelessness each year.
- That’s nearly 1 in 20 students—living in shelters, cars, motels, or temporarily doubled up with others.
- Homelessness isn’t always visible. Many unhoused children go to school each day without revealing that they didn’t sleep in a bed the night before.
- Children who experience homelessness are more likely to struggle with mental health, school attendance, and basic access to food and hygiene. For many, school is their only sense of normalcy.
- According to the San Diego County Office of Education, students without stable housing are:
2x more likely to repeat a grade
3x more likely to suffer from anxiety or depression
- Often without access to basic things like clean clothes, school supplies, or a safe space to do homework
Why Monarch School Matters
- Monarch School is one of the only public-private partnerships in the country dedicated solely to educating unhoused children.
- It serves students from Kindergarten to 12th grade, providing not just an education but clothing, food, therapy, and family support.
- For Monarch students, a holiday gift isn’t just a toy—it’s a symbol that they’re seen, they’re valued, and they’re part of a community.
