Some friendships stand the test of time, and then there are friendships like Stephen and Mike’s — legendary in their own right. These two were more than just friends for over 30 years; they were family.

When Stephen was diagnosed with MS, nothing changed between them. Their connection didn’t falter — if anything, it deepened. Mike never saw Stephen for his illness; he saw his friend. He never hesitated to help — whether that meant lending a hand with meals or offering support in small, unseen ways. There was no pity, no awkwardness. Just love, loyalty, and laughter — always laughter.

We often joked that Stephen played a role in Mike finding love, too. When Mike began dating his now-wife Carol, we all went to dinner one night. Mike, without skipping a beat, turned to her and said, “Esther always sits on Stephen’s right, and I sit on the left — I have to help him eat.” It wasn’t said to impress her. It was simply how things were. Because that’s who Mike is — and that’s the kind of friendship they had.

Now, Mike is honoring Stephen’s memory in a beautiful way. He’s running the marathon in Aruba — not just as a personal challenge, but as a tribute to his best friend. The proceeds from this run will go toward the MS Ability Alliance, a charity dedicated to supporting individuals living with Multiple Sclerosis.
