Dear friends,
Did you know that 1 in 4 fatal law enforcement encounters involves a person with mental illness? MH First is an innovative project of the Anti Police Terror Project Sacramento that provides a new model for non-police response to mental health crises. The goal of MH First is to respond to mental health crises including, but not limited to, psychiatric emergencies, substance use support, and domestic violence situations that require victim extraction.
This community-based initiative is powerful because it provides a vision for reimagined public safety that reduces harms caused by the police. If this initiative gets adequate funding and is successful, it can serve as a model that could be replicated across the country.
Funds are needed to expand the MH First program from weekends only to providing care 24/7. We all know mental health crises don’t happen at scheduled times!
