Support Mercy Blankson & Her Children—In Memory of Hero Joe

Donation protected
In July 2018, Joseph “Joe” Blankson died a national hero after rescuing 13 passengers from a capsized boat in Rivers State, Nigeria. On his 14th attempt, Joe drowned—leaving behind his wife, Mercy, and their two young children, aged 5 years and 7 months at the time.

Joe’s act of bravery was praised across the country. The government publicly promised Mercy a job and pledged ₦10 million (around $25,000) for their children’s education.

Seven years later, Mercy has received nothing.

Joe was not given a traditional burial. According to Kalabari custom, those who die by drowning are not returned home. Instead, Joe was left at the riverside. Mercy was never allowed to see his body—not even in death. She continues to grieve with no closure and no support.

Today, their daughter is 7 years old, and their son is 12. Mercy has worked tirelessly to care for them alone. Despite promises, she is still waiting for help that never came.

We are raising $25,000—the same amount that was promised years ago—to support Mercy’s children and ease the financial weight she carries. The funds will go directly toward education costs, living expenses, and long-term stability.

If Joe gave his life to save others, this is our chance to give something back to the family he left behind.

Thank you for your compassion and support.
