A few weeks ago, our dear friend Melondy (Mel) was taken to the ER after not feeling well for quite some time. After a series of tests and an MRI, doctors discovered a large mass in her pelvis. Further testing confirmed that it was cancer, and that it has spread to her liver and lungs.

Mel has since been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. At this time, her body is not strong enough to undergo treatment, so her focus is on gaining strength and comfort while her medical team explores the best path forward.

If you know Mel, you know that she is a pillar of this community. Everyone who meets her loves her. Her greatest joy has always been serving others — as the cheer coach for the PBYFL cheerleading squads, a member of the board for the Permian Basin Youth Football League, a volunteer at the local soup kitchen, and a second mom to so many kids who have found comfort, encouragement, and a safe place in her home. She’s always been the first to lend a hand, offer a smile, or open her doors for a sleepover.

But above all, Mel’s heart belongs to her daughters and grandkids, who are her world. Even now, while she’s fighting for her life, she faces each day with a radiant smile and unshakable faith.

Mel has given so much of herself to others — to her community, her friends, and every child who needed love and support. Now it’s our turn to return the favor. She is the kind of friend who would give the shirt off her back without a second thought, and she deserves to feel that same generosity and care poured back into her during this fight.
