Support for Melissa During an Unimaginable Hardship

Our dear friend Melissa is currently facing an overwhelming chapter in her life. With grace and quiet strength, she has taken on the immense responsibility of supporting her entire immediate family—emotionally, physically, and financially.

Melissa has shouldered the cost of her brother’s funeral and purchased a family burial plot—just the beginning of a series of heart-wrenching burdens she must bear. Her father, who was diagnosed with colon cancer last year, has made the deeply difficult decision to forgo further treatment following a major surgery, an arduous recovery, and chemotherapy. According to his medical team, he is not expected to live past the summer.

Despite these devastating circumstances, Melissa made it possible for her father to see Aaron one last time—a moment of profound importance for their family. Sadly, her father, once the provider and pillar of their family farm, is no longer able to work or maintain the property. That responsibility now rests entirely on Melissa.

A dedicated special education teacher of over 15 years, Melissa also serves as a senior advisor, co-op liaison, and transition specialist—roles she embraces with passion, helping students navigate life after high school. She gives endlessly to her students, colleagues, friends, and family, yet asks for nothing in return.

Melissa lives in Maine with her husband, Jack, and her two stepchildren. For months, she has been commuting back and forth between Maine, Massachusetts, and New York, managing family crises on top of her full-time job. They have already covered urgent expenses. The next major cost involves hiring an excavator to prepare the family farm for sale—a property that includes dilapidated structures, old tools, and outbuildings that must be cleared before the land can be sold. The hope is that the proceeds will allow her mother to relocate to Maine and live close to Melissa.

This is an incredibly trying time for an extraordinary person. Melissa is the kind of friend who shows up before you even know you need her. She gives freely of her time, her care, and her love. And now, she needs us.
