My name is Melissa, and when I was 20 years old, I survived a violent crime in my own home. I was shot in the head in front of my two small children, and the trauma from that day has shaped every part of my life. Decades later, I am still undergoing medical treatments and surgeries, and I lost a part of my brain in the shooting. Living with these challenges has been incredibly difficult, especially as I have been on disability since I was 20.
Recently, I learned that the person responsible for this crime is being released from prison much earlier than expected. I was not notified about his early release and only found out by looking online. This news has brought back many painful memories and increased my need for support. Organizations like Safe Horizon and domestic violence prevention groups have been a lifeline for people like me, but I am still struggling to get the support I need right now. I want to make sure that others in similar situations have access to counseling, clothing, shelter, and safety planning—resources that are so vital for healing and safety.
I am asking for your help, not just for myself, but to help end the generational cycle of domestic violence. I want to support outreach and education for teenagers who may be in abusive relationships, so they can recognize the signs and break free from the cycle. I wish I had access to this kind of support and education when I was younger, and with your kindness, we can create real change for others. Your support will help me continue my recovery and allow me to give back to organizations that make a difference in the lives of survivors.
