Mel is a father, a family man, and a widower who once made a living as a stage actor in New York City. But on weekends in Lowest Greenville in Dallas, he becomes Mel The Shell Man, setting up a beautiful display of seashells on the hood of his white Toyota 4Runner, selling them to passersby. His fascination with shells began in the late '60s during his honeymoon in Aruba, and it has been a significant part of his life ever since.

Mel and his late wife, Barbara, once ran a thriving business named Seashell Wonders, selling shells and shell-made crafts at markets across the country. However, they had to put an end to the venture when Barbara was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.

After the profound loss of Barbara, Mel was hit with another challenge: a diagnosis of Stage IV spinal cancer. In the midst of grappling with this life-altering news, he found solace by reconnecting with his love for seashells, a passion that provided a comforting anchor during these tumultuous times.

Despite his health challenges, Mel continues to set up his makeshift shop, sharing his love for shells and the joy they bring. He doesn't just sell shells; he connects with people, brings smiles to their faces, and creates lasting memories, especially for the children who get to pick out 10 free shells to take home.

To Mel, it was never really about the shells. Their natural beauty and striking presentation serve as a hook for him to reach out and connect with anyone who stops by. He believes that everyone's life has a beautiful, epic story, and his is unfolding in this unique way.

Mel's story has touched the heart of our CEO and founder Brett Weiss. Brett was best friends with Mel’s son Jed who passed away suddenly at the age of 41 in 2014. Brett and Mushroom Lyfe, believe a cause such will touch your hearts, as Brett thrives on making a difference in people’s lives and Mel is an important person and near and dear to his heart. Despite his financial struggles and health challenges, Mel continues to enrich his community with his passion and kindness. But he needs our help.
