Support AIL Ferrara (and my marathon! :) )

Hi,

As you may know, in 2023 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. While living and working in the UK, due to a delay in diagnosis and anticipating a challenging time, I temporarily moved back to Italy to be closer to my family and to be treated and taken care of by my hometown hospital in Italy, specifically by the onco-haematology ward of Ferrara's Hospital.

I have been grateful to the ward's staff (nurses, doctors, and assistants) for the patience, support, dedication, and genuine care they showed while looking after me and now I remember that time with affection, despite the challenges.

Since January 2024, I have been in remission. At the time of my diagnosis, I was in the last month of training for my first marathon. A little over a year after the end of my therapies, I am now re-training for my first marathon, which will be on the 25th of May in Edinburgh. As a gesture of gratitude, I would like to dedicate this marathon to raise funds for the haematology ward that treated me through ‘AIL – Ferrara’, the Ferrara's Hospital section of the Italian charity working against leukaemia, lymphomas, and myelomas.

AIL Ferrara is a charity affiliated with Ferrara's Hospital, supporting the haematology ward in many ways, including but not limited to home medical assistance, patients' transport, psychological support, financial help for patients in need, the purchase of research and diagnostic equipment, sponsoring training for medical staff, as well as support for the haematology activities of the hospital's paediatric clinic. Donating through GoFundMe is simple, fast, and totally secure. While they will usually send the money directly to the charity, as this charity is Italian, donations cannot be directly sent to them. Donations will be sent to me, and then I will transfer them to AIL Ferrara after the deadline.

Ciao,

Come forse saprai nel 2023 sono stato diagnosticato con un linfoma di Hodgkin e dal Gennaio 2024 sono in remissione. Anche se vivo e lavoro in Scozia, in seguito a ritardi diagnostici e per la volonta’ di stare vicino alla mia famiglia in un periodo che si preannunciava difficile ho deciso di trasferirmi temporaneamente a Ferrara, dove sono stato curato eccellentemente dal team del day hospital di onco-ematologia dell’ Arcispedale S.Anna Di Ferrara.

Sono grato a tutto il personale del day hospital per essersi preso cura di me, ed il ricordo di quel periodo e’ legato anche alla preofessionalita’ e disponibilita’ che ho ricevuto durante le cure oltre che alle ovvie difficolta’ del caso.

Quando sono stato diagnosticato stavo preparando la mia prima maratona (che per ovvi motivi non sono riuscito a fare), ed ora dopo poco più di un anno dalla mia remissione la sto ri-preparando (sarà ad Edimburgo il 25 Maggio). Come segno di gratitudine, e seguendo l’usanza britannica di raccogliere fondi per associazioni di volontariato in occasione di ‘sfide sportive’, ho pensato di raccogliere fondi tramite AIL -Ferrara per il reparto di ematologia dell’ospedale di Ferrara che si e’ preso cura di me.

AIL -Ferrara e’ la sezione locale dell’associazione Italiana contro le leucemie, linfomi e mieloma. Le sue attivita’ sono di supporto alle attivita’ del reparto di ematologia e di cura del paziente con azioni che vanno dalla sostegno alla ricerca e all’aggiornamento professionale, al supporto psicologico e finanziario per i pazienti e le loro famiglie ma anche al sostegno dell’attivita’ di oncoematologia della clinica pediatrica dell’ospedale. Per la raccolta fondi sto usufruendo di GoFundMe. GoFundMe e’ una piattaforma comunemente usata in questi casi di raccolta fondi per associazioni di volontariato o di crowdfunding. Tutte le donazioni dopo la deadline verranno poi versate da me ad AIL Ferrara dopo la maratona.
