Help us train local Maternity Agents to deliver life-saving health talks on maternal health and family planning in rural Sierra Leone.
Sierra Leone is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be pregnant. 1 in 20 women die from causes related to pregnancy or childbirth. Most of these deaths are preventable with timely information, access to care, and community support.
At Masanga Hospital, we are already reaching rural women through the Maternal Outreach Project, offering free ultrasound scans and blood pressure checks in remote villages. These efforts help identify high-risk pregnancies early and encourage safer, facility-based births. In 2024 we scanned 4600 women and identified 403 high risk pregnancies! Furthermore, we have trained local maternity agents to educate women in rural villages about healthy pregnancies and the importance of giving birth at a health facility—through both group health talks and one-on-one guidance.
We are now expanding the project to include new health talks on family planning, contraception, and malnutrition—topics that are crucial for preventing unwanted pregnancies and ensuring the health of mothers and babies.
Why It Matters
Many women in Sierra Leone live far from health services. Poor roads, river crossings, poverty, and misinformation often result in women delivering at home without skilled care. By training local maternity agents, we bridge the gap between families and the health system—right where they live.
By equipping Maternity Agents to include family planning and contraception in their health talks, we can shift community norms, reduce stigma, and build healthier, more informed communities. Access to family planning and comprehensive contraception education helps prevent high-risk and unintended pregnancies — reducing teenage pregnancies, unsafe abortions, school dropouts, HIV and other STIs, sexual assault, child marriage, and maternal morbidity and deaths. It empowers women and girls to make choices about their health and future—and it saves lives.
