Hello, I hope this day finds you well. My little brother Mat and his family aren't so fortunate today; I am writing on behalf of them. The unexpected flash floods the night of 8/9 in Southern Wisconsin, Brown Deer and more specifically their area was hit HARD, not only by the heavy rain and near by creek, but also a retention pond that gave way completely submerging a good portion of their housing complex. They lost everything in their basement, first floor, and underground garage- including Ro's SUV. His wife, Rovahna (who cannot swim) and 1yr old daughter trapped in their 2nd floor bedroom. Mat was on duty at the time of the flooding and rushed home to help her, having to swim to their entry door. They are safe, my 7yr old nephew was thankfully at his grandparents for the night. Not only do they have to deal with the shock and reality of losing most of their possessions within minutes, they are now being DISPLACED. The property owners are giving everyone ONE WEEK to gather what they can and make arrangements before boarding up the property so they can start structure and internal repairs. Mat & Rovahna are both selfless people who have made their careers in giving back. Mat is an MPD officer and Rovahna is a grief and trauma counselor, specializing in s*qual assult and abuse. A good portion of their savings was depleted between Rovahna being on maternity leave and Mat being hurt while on duty, leaving him off for 6mo due surgery and physical therapy- not to mention they canceled their renters insurance because they couldn't afford it at the time and never renewed it. Oof. Natural disasters are extremely rare (1927) in our area, and no one was prepared for this. On behalf of my family, thank you deeply from the bottom of my heart for your time and care. Blessed be.
