Support Mason Letourneau and his Family’s Road to Recovery

On October 18th at around 4:00, my nephew Mason Letourneau, 11 years old, was walking home from a teen event at a local church in East Longmeadow. When crossing the street in the designated crosswalk, he was struck by a distracted driver who was not looking and drove straight into him. Mason hit the bumper, then his face hit the windshield, and he was thrown where he lay unconscious in the road as EMTs and First Responders arrived. He was rushed to the trauma unit at BMC Children’s Hospital. Mason sustained severe road rash from head to toe, massive bruises, lost 4 teeth with damage to gums, stitches for a puncture to his forehead, and cuts on his mouth. His femur was broken in 3 places, which required surgery and 2 rods put in place that will need to be removed later due to his continued growth.

The trauma of the event is still very fresh for Mason and his family. Parents Eileen and Jim have missed much work, and Eileen, who is a Springfield Elementary School teacher, had to take leave to care for him, without pay. I chose to do this fundraiser with much argument from his very proud parents who are going through a tough time. It’s not easy to accept help, as they are typically the ones giving it to others. While thankful in every way possible that Mason is recovering and the nightmare of the “what if” sneaking in, this accident has caused this family much financial hardship and will continue to do so as they navigate the path of recovery.

No parent should be worrying themselves sick wondering how they will pay the bills while home caring for an injured child. They did not ask for this, and I know we can support them through it.
