On the morning of December 29th, a fire broke out in the friend's apartment Mary-Kate was staying in while she was home for the holidays in downtown Lincoln, NE. The fire completely destroyed the third floor of the building where Mary-Kate’s luggage, clothing, and much of her personal belongings were stored. As a result, Mary-kate lost everything she had brought with her to Lincoln: her computer, clothes, shoes, personal items, and much more.
Tragically, Mary-Kate’s two cats, Phil and Sophia, were also inside the apartment at the time of the fire. Thankfully, Phil was able to escape and survive. However, he sustained significant trauma and has required extensive treatment at the veterinary hospital. He will continue to need treatment and monitoring as he recovers. Sadly, Sophia did not survive the fire, and her loss has been devastating and deeply saddening.
We are creating this GoFundMe to help Mary-Kate to begin to recover from this sudden and traumatic loss. Funds raised will go toward covering veterinary bills for Phil, buying a new computer for PhD program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, replacing essential items such as clothing, shoes, luggage, and personal care necessities, and helping Mary-Kate replace other basic belongings.
