Since 2018, Earth Medicine, a not-for-profit organisation, has been providing vital physical rehabilitation treatments to people living in the refugee camp in Lesvos, Greece. Their aim is to provide therapies to improve mobility, relieve pain, and help manage health conditions of asylum seekers who have lived through war, violence, famine, and extreme poverty before undertaking the long, perilous journeys that brought them to Lesvos. There are two dedicated containers inside the refugee camp where Physiotherapy, Acupuncture, and Therapeutic Massage treatments are offered. The team and volunteers of Earth Medicine address severe physical issues commonly presented among the asylum seeker population, for which there is no treatment available in the refugee camp.

The refugee camp can sometimes receive 500-600 persons in one day alone, including large numbers of children and of people with disabilities. Therefore, the team of Earth Medicine greatly depend on volunteer healthcare professionals to meet the needs of those who seek refuge. Volunteers are usually asked to stay a minimum of one month, if feasible.

WHY I NEED YOUR HELP

Up to this year, Earth Medicine was able to work and expand thanks to funding received from various humanitarian organisations. However, their main funders have had to withdraw their support due to the increasingly unstable situation in the world creating a greater need for urgent humanitarian aid in other areas. For this reason, Earth Medicine was forced to reduce their costs to a minimum and is no longer able to support costs for volunteers.

In April this year, I will be joining Earth Medicine for a month as a volunteer and offer Acupuncture and Massage in the refugee camp. This page is set up to help me raise funds that will cover my travel, accommodation and living costs for one month in Lesvos.
