Support Marissa's Mystery Book Sale Fundraiser for QPL

My name is Marissa and I am a book addict! Reading has been my love and my escape since I was quite young and continues today. I have turned that love of reading into a passion project of my Bookstagram account @BookishCityGal where I can share my love of reading and everything bookish with friends and strangers alike.

A large part of my love for reading is owed to time spent in my public library growing up. The library was a place where I always felt welcome, safe and excited to explore. As I got older, the library became the place I went to study or do research as I pursued my degrees. It continued to be a place of calm no matter where I was in life.

In the past few months, the mayor of NYC threatened to cut the budget of the city's public libraries by over $58 million dollars! This cut would have resulted in branch closures, limited hours, unfinished renovations and MAJOR cuts to programming. Like many book loving New Yorkers, I felt devastated and helpless and wanted to do something, however small, to help my beloved library.

Since the libraries are all about community, I have partnered with the Queens Public Library, as well as two local Astoria organizations, Ladies First Astoria and the 31st Ave Open Street to host a mystery book sale benefitting the Astoria branch of QPL.

Since the planning for this event began, community support for library funding helped convinced the mayor not to make any budget cuts to the NYC public libraries. While this is absolutely amazing, the libraries continue to be underfunded event with the full budget they should have been receiving so I am so excited for this event.

The mystery book sale is taking place on Saturday, July 27th on the 31st ave open street in Astoria from 1-4pm and I'd love for everyone to stop by and pick up a book or two! However, if you can't make it in person, you can absolutely contribute to this fundraiser right here. Literacy should be accessible to everyone and libraries provide the safe spaces for our communities to explore the joy of reading and so much more more.
