Luis and María came to Minnesota looking for a safe place to raise their two sons. They are valued members of the Hopkins, MN community and are well known at their church, their sons' schools, and their jobs as dedicated parents and hard workers. They are thrilled to be expecting their third child in July of this year.

María was on her way to work on January 22nd, 2026, when the car she was in was stopped by ICE officers. She tried to show officers her papers and explain that her family had a pending asylum case, but she was detained and taken back to her family's home where her husband, Luis, was with their two sons. The officers gave Luis and the family an ultimatum: either come outside immediately and be detained if you want to see your mother anytime soon, or stay in that house, in safety, and have your mother taken away and flown out of the state. The whole family was taken into custody and flown to a family detention center in Dilley, TX, despite a judge's order that they not be removed from Minnesota. Lawyers filed an emergency habeas corpus petition, which was granted. The courts determined that the family's detention was unlawful and demanded that they be returned to Minnesota and released from custody.

María, Luis, and their two boys have since returned home to Minnesota, but are now facing significant legal costs in addition to their daily expenses and, soon, a new baby. If you are able to help offset these costs, they would be very grateful. They want to extend their deepest gratitude to all those who have helped them throughout this experience and say that they are grateful to God for sending them angels who have helped take care of them.
