Steve's family is coordinating this fundraiser for Steve Long, a local Pine Island commercial fisherman, who lost his home to an electrical fire on Sunday, February 22. He built with his father in 1972 when he was 13. His father bought the land and built the road and the house with Steve and the family on weekends over the course of a year or so. It was built in the style of a weekend fishing cabin. Later he added solar water heating and an addition to the house. His father retired there and passed it on to the family when he passed away in 1995. Steve had lived there and turned it into a true fisherman's cabin. It has a lot of family meaning, not just to him, but his children, grandchildren and a lot of other family and friends. It was an electrical fire, which occurred while he was on his boat fishing this past Sunday thanks to the neighbors who called 911 along with the first responders, especially all the different fire departments. No one was in the house and everyone was OK but he lost everything including Mel Meo's old truck that he kept and cared for since her passing. He loved that and the memory of her. He had a couple of boats he was restoring along with machinery, tools, equipment and on and on. Many amazing people have showed up to help and have been extraordinarily generous and we are so grateful. We are trying to get his water and electric restored and buy him trailer to live in and funds to start rebuilding. so hopefully he can rebuild something eventually. For those who know Steve he isn't one to take or accept charity graciously, but he is clearly grateful for all the amazing Islanders and others who have reached out to help him through this difficult time.
