Support Liv’s journey to volunteer at a school in Zanzibar

Hello!
My name is Livia Quinney and I am a student at Gillingham School(Dorset, UK) in year 10. I am very fortunate to have been selected to be a part of a volunteering trip to Zanzibar, Africa, in July 2025. My school is in a partnership with African Adventures, a charity which is dedicated to improving the lives of young people in Africa.
African Adventures works with six schools near Stone Town in Zanzibar. The purpose of this trip is to help improve the lives of many underprivileged children and their schools. On this adventure, volunteers are able to get involved with Teaching, Multi-sports or Building and Renovation. Classrooms at the partnered schools are under-resourced and very overcrowded. So by choosing the teaching assistant role volunteers are able to help teachers deliver lessons and to help support small groups of students with their work.
On the other hand, volunteers that choose the building and renovation role are able to work on the construction/repair of classrooms, toilets, kitchens, offices, and assembly halls. The work is led by a local builder and can be very physically demanding. The aim is to provide a healthy environment for the children to reach their full potential, when learning.
I think this volunteering trip will provide me an opportunity to see the challenges other children face in their education, challenges I have been fortunate enough not to have to deal with. This trip will enable me to take my learning beyond the classroom as well as help me develop a stronger sense of compassion whilst contributing to a real change in a struggling community. I plan to help fundraise this by hosting multiple bake sales and other odd jobs such as dog walking for members of my community. I am also planning on getting a Saturday job as I have recently turned 15. I am thrilled to have this life changing opportunity and I know it’s going to give me a whole new perspective on life. Any money that is donated to the cost of the trip will be greatly appreciated of and if I am able to raise over the set goal all extra money will go towards African Adventures so please check out their website below!
