This GoFundMe will secure funding for literacy programs for children and families living in Kwa-Zulu Natal Provinces in Underberg areas in South Africa. Due to USAID funding cuts these families living in rural remote villages are confronted with one of the highest rates of illiteracy among children, women, and single mothers.

The Family Literacy Program (FLP) is a community-based nonprofit organization working to support family literacy for children and parents. FLP’s sustainable child and parent literacy program through its literacy coaching initiative is in jeopardy due to USAID funding cuts. The literacy coaching program trains local high school graduates, with no college or job prospects and facing high risk of drug addiction, to become reading coaches in their Kwa-Zulu villages. Family Literacy Program needs to raise $25,000 to save the literacy coaching initiative which is its only means of providing access to literacy and education to children and families in rural Kwa-Zulu land in South Africa.

We are a group of American social work students from Bridgewater State University in Massachusetts who went to South Africa on a service-learning travel course in spring 2025 and witnessed firsthand the needs of the Kwa-Zulu children and families. We committed ourselves to supporting these families’ literacy and ask for your help with raising the funds needed. We accept any donation of any amounts which will support children and family literacy in this part of the world. We are thankful for your consideration of a gift donation.
