On Tuesday, 9/17/24, around 5:30 pm in Independence, my cousin, Lisa, was shot 4 times and left lying in the street in a pool of blood.
The doctor said one bullet barely missed her heart. Another shot went through one lung and sent shrapnel into the other. She has been fighting for her life ever since. She has had horrific nightmares about the shooting and is on medication for this. She has fought off infections, fluid buildup in her lungs helped by a chest tube, as well as pneumonia. She’s had physical therapy to help her learn to walk again. She is improving daily now but will be on oxygen for quite a while. She still has a very long road to recovery.
Her oldest daughter, Courtney, has been staying with her at the hospital, helping with her care. Lisa has 4 beautiful daughters and her sweet mother who has been staying with her as well.
Lisa is very loved by her family. We all want to help her as much as possible. Lisa wants to move away from the Kansas City area to a smaller town. We are looking for a home for her to rent near us. Courtney will stay with her mother while continuing her medical care. Lisa should be released from the hospital this week. She no longer has a home to go to.
We are asking for, first of all, prayers for her continued healing. We are starting this fundraiser to help her to begin a new life. Lisa has nothing, and this is truly a new beginning for her.
There were two illegal Honduran brothers who began a deadly carjacking crime spree through Missouri. They had killed a man in Joplin (he was from Oklahoma) and dumped his body on I-44. One brother was arrested for DWI; the other proceeded to shoot my cousin because he couldn’t understand how to start her truck. She had given him the keys and told him to take it. He smiled at her as he started shooting. I assume he used all his bullets on her since he left her truck and found another woman in a car and pistol-whipped her, and she was in critical condition at a hospital as well. The police had a foot pursuit and apprehended him as well. You may look up the news articles about this if you google it.
