For the past four years, I have been honored to walk the sacred path of becoming a mara'akame—a traditional healer in the Wixárika (Huichol) tradition—as part of a committed group of people who have devoted their lives to this work for the world. On November 17th, I will embark on my fifth pilgrimage alongside my group to the sacred places in Mexico. This year holds special significance: successfully completing this journey may lead to my formal initiation as a mara'akame in September 2026.

What is a Mara'akame?

The Wixárika people, indigenous to the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico, have preserved their spiritual traditions for thousands of years. A mara'akame serves their communities as a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds—a healer, ceremonial leader, and keeper of sacred knowledge. The word “mara’akame” meaning “one who knows” requires many years of personal sacrifice, growth, and pilgrimage to sacred sites, followed by a traditional initiation. As part of this traditional medicine path group, we make pilgrimages and prayers and bring many offerings to the sacred places.

My Journey

This is a lifelong path of commitment and service, one I have heard the calling to walk for several years. I formally entered this path in 2021, beginning my five-year pilgrimage journey. These past four years have been incredibly transformative. The journey has brought immense joy, profoundly difficult challenges, and an ever-deepening connection to this beautiful, mysterious world.
