As the people of Mérida, Yucatán, experience increasing urbanization and gentrification, there are fewer opportunities for diverse and intergenerational communities to engage with local culture. In response, we created Lignum, a community-based space in Mérida, where people come together to connect, create, and grow. Since our launch in 2024, we’ve offered a community seed bank, contemporary Maya language classes and revitalization programs, workshops on screenprinting and other arts, documentary screenings, and casual gatherings that nourish both mind and spirit. Most of our workshops are free or donation-based.
Lignum is a haven for culture, rest, and resistance. We believe in celebrating community and honoring the land that holds us. At our urban “milpa,” we practice indigenous science that respects the natural cycles of the region, and most of our workshops are hosted by indigenous and local experts. Every project we do is grounded in collective memory, creativity, and respect for the land and its people.
Why We Need Your Support Now
Rising rent in our community has placed us in a difficult spot: At this essential time, we either need to pay more to stay in the space or find a new home. Either presents challenges. As a grassroots project, we rely on the generosity and solidarity of our community. You can help make Lignum more welcoming, accessible, and resilient. Right now, we’re seeking support to cover essential costs, like rent and basic infrastructure improvements.
Your contribution will help us:
- Improve our shared spaces for comfort and accessibility ($550 USD for Tables, Chairs, Lamps, Cleaning Utilities, Rugs, Artwork, Speakers, etc.)
- Expand our seed archive and library ($190 USD for the purchase of more seeds and a shelf structure for more organized storage).
- Cover expenses to keep the space open and low-cost. ($1,680 USD for rent, utilities, and local permitting).
- Finance buying products like honey, fresh fruit and produce, and artisinal crafts to keep providing resources to our community. ($250 USD)
- Pay for the creation and admin of this GoFundMe ($60 USD for administration expenses, video produciton, and accounting).
- Pay local and indigenous biologists, linguists, and other experts to share their knowledge with the community in workshops, long-form classes, and speeches (all additional money raised).
