Initially attributing it to sciatic nerve pain, she sought medical advice to uncover the root of her discomfort. Unfortunately, the diagnosis turned out to be the devastating ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. ALS affects every single muscle in the body, and ultimately the muscles atrophy, or waste away completely.

About ALS

ALS, often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects approximately 20,000 Americans at any given time. The disease leads to the gradual loss of muscle control, impacting the ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe. While there is currently no cure for ALS, treatments can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

Life Paused

This diagnosis has upended Laura and her family's lives. Laura and her wife, Barbara Gonzalez, were in the midst of trying to have another baby. However, this dream is now on hold due to the financial and physical challenges posed by the disease. Laura is the devoted mother to their 3-year-old daughter, Olive, and the primary breadwinner for the family.
