Help Brian & Katie Advocate for Their Son, Landon

Katie and Brian McGregor chose to keep their family’s situation private for as long as they could.

They followed the chain of command at every step.
They raised concerns early and respectfully.
They trusted that advocating for their son would not negatively affect him.

That trust was broken.

Brian and Katie are the parents of Landon McGregor, a junior at Benjamin Russell High School. Landon has Down syndrome and receives special education services. Until December 9, 2025, Landon attended school, learned alongside his peers, and took pride in being part of his school community.

Today, Landon is not in school. He is receiving homebound services.

This situation is not about truancy.
It is not about parents refusing to send their child to school.
It is not about a lack of cooperation.

Landon is out of school because unresolved safety and trust issues remain unaddressed — issues that directly affect his emotional well-being and his ability to access an education. These concerns were raised early, respectfully, and through proper administrative channels.

Brian and Katie were repeatedly assured that advocating for their son would not negatively affect him. Those assurances were later broken.

Instead of feeling protected, Landon was labeled.
He was disciplined inconsistently.
He was accused of behavior that was later contradicted.
Most damaging of all, he was made to feel like he was not believed.

Landon was told not to go home and lie to his parents when he knew he wasn’t lying. He was also referred to as a “half-breed,” based solely on an Alabama Crimson Tide shirt he was wearing to support a friend. All of these actions were committed by an adult, not a peer. There is irrefutable proof of everything stated.

For any child, this is harmful.
For a child with a disability, it is devastating.

Brian and Katie have emphasized that happiness is not a buzzword. For special-needs students, happiness is inseparable from safety, dignity, and trust. A child who does not feel safe or believed cannot learn. A child who is afraid cannot meaningfully access education.

As of January 29, 2026, the family was also informed that the one thing Landon loves to do — serving as a baseball manager — cannot happen until a “resolution” is reached.

Throughout this process, the family has received repeated explanations centered on adult concerns, personnel boundaries, and administrative limitations, while clear and concrete safeguards for their child remained undefined. At times, the experience was marked by complete silence or days spent waiting for answers attributed to review by an “external entity.”

Brian and Katie are not asking for punishment.

They are asking for accountability, clarity, and prevention, so their son can return to school without fear.

Legal advocacy is now necessary to ensure that Landon’s right to safety and a Free Appropriate Public Education is honored in action, not merely promised in words.
