Lameck Nyabenda is a devoted single father and a hardworking civilian janitor for the U.S. Navy in San Diego. After recently being promoted to full-time, Lameck faced an unexpected setback: a hernia operation that requires him to be off work for two months. Because he hasn’t accrued sick leave yet, this time away from work puts his family in a difficult financial position. Lameck’s job is physically demanding, and his doctor has advised him to fully heal before returning, making it impossible for him to earn an income during this period.

Lameck’s journey has been marked by resilience and determination. Fifteen years ago, he and his family emigrated from Central East Africa to San Diego, seeking a better life. Despite the challenges of starting over in a new country, Lameck worked hard to get an education, eventually graduating from San Diego State University. As a single dad, he has always put his children first, ensuring they have the support and opportunities they need to succeed. San Diego’s high cost of living has made financial stability a constant challenge, but Lameck’s commitment to his family has never wavered.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Lameck and his family since they arrived in San Diego. Our families have remained close friends, and I’ve watched his children grow into remarkable young adults.
