in mid-January 2023, 9 SEIU Local 1 frontline staff on active organizing campaigns were blindsided by their sudden layoffs with less than two weeks to contend with & make hard decisions around this unforeseen loss of their livelihoods. with rent due and utility & medical bills rapidly piling up, many of our coworkers who were laid off through no fault of their own are now heading out of a holiday season with already-lean resources into the terrifying uncertainty of an imminent recession while still needing to provide for their families. many folks have no savings, no financial cushion, and few resources to bridge the gap as they begin the harrowing process of searching for another job.
your donation will go directly to laid-off union members. we hope that by coming together and pooling our resources, we can continue to support our coworkers who were so unceremoniously terminated from the progressive & transformative work they felt called to do, to advance the cause of low-wage workers and do right by our union members. as trade unionists, solidarity to us means leaning on each other for support, so that we may continue our collective fight to uplift working-class & oppressed peoples. it means taking care, real care, of each other as we build the equitable & just world we want to live in. we sincerely hope that our allies in this movement can join us in supporting recently laid-off union staff and start practicing what we preach about solidarity & communities of care.
