My mum, Kristy, is one of the strongest and most selfless people I know — but right now she is facing more than anyone should have to endure alone.

Kristy lives with chronic pain throughout her entire body and has recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia. She requires multiple pain-management injections every year just to function day to day. On top of this, she has already undergone open heart surgery and is now facing another major heart operation very soon.

Despite her ongoing illness and pain, Mum has always put others before herself. She has spent her life helping people in any way she could — offering support, kindness, time, and care, without ever asking for anything in return. She is the person others turn to, even when she herself is struggling.

Kristy has always worked for herself, which means she has no superannuation and no financial safety net. Earlier this year, the pressure of managing everything alone became too much, and she was forced to sell her home.

The small amount of money she had left was placed into an interest account, intended to be the beginning of some form of security for her retirement and cover medical costs.

Tragically, Mum was recently scammed and lost every cent she had left. That money was meant to go towards building a small granny flat so she could have stability, dignity, and so that I could properly care for her following her upcoming heart surgery. Losing it has been devastating, both emotionally and financially.

Mum is currently living with me and my young family. While we are doing everything we can to support her, she is now left with no savings and is struggling to keep up with the growing costs of medical care, treatment, saving for surgery and everyday living.
