Hi, my name is Melissa, and I’m Kingsley’s Grammy.

Over the past several days, our family has been living every parent’s nightmare. Our sweet 8-month-old granddaughter, Kingsley, became suddenly and critically ill and was rushed to Riley Hospital for Children, where she remains in intensive care.

Kingsley has been fighting a severe infection that has affected her brain and body. To protect her airway and allow her body to rest and heal, she has been intubated and placed on a ventilator. Imaging of her brain revealed a watershed stroke, predominantly affecting her right frontal region, caused by the infection and the stress it placed on her body. Kingsley is currently in liver failure as her liver fight to move infection through. In just one day, she has endured 22 seizures, requiring constant neurological monitoring and aggressive treatment to protect her brain.

Despite everything she is facing, Kingsley continues to fight with incredible strength. Her medical team is doing everything possible to stabilize her, stop further injury, and support her recovery. The road ahead is uncertain and will take time, patience, and close medical follow-up.

During this critical period, Kingsley’s mom, Ashlyn, needs to be by her side full-time — advocating for her care, making medical decisions, and being present for every step of her recovery. Ashlyn will be taking FMLA leave, which protects her job but provides no income, creating a significant financial strain during an already overwhelming time.
