Support Kelsey in this moment

Kelsey is a champion to everyone who knows her, and she needs our help right now. She has a kind and calm soul that belies just how strong and fierce she truly is. As a child, she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and has dedicated her career to supporting individuals and families as they navigate health challenges. I met Kelsey in graduate school, where she sought to bridge her deep intellect with her passion for supporting children with Type 1 diabetes. Over those two years, I came to know her well and saw just how funny, generous, and thoughtful she was outside the classroom.

Over the past few days, I’ve been flooded with memories of her—walking through the snow in Seattle, watching as she eloquently eviscerates policys that hurt families, helping her with her dress on her wedding day, listening compassionately to a sad story, laughing with a mischievous glint in her eye, and snuggling Rowan. There is so much Kelsey does and so much she still can do, and we want to support her and her family during this life-changing moment.

Recently, Kelsey suffered a brain bleed during maternity leave, just before she was set to return to work. While on a family holiday in Phoenix, she was struck by the worst headache she had ever experienced, followed by other painful symptoms. Brain bleeds can present in many different ways, so it took time for Kelsey to receive the appropriate care. Thankfully, she was admitted to a top-tier hospital, where doctors were able to stop the bleeding and begin her recovery.

We are still in the very early days, and every need feels immediate. While the family remains in Phoenix—away from their home and normal routines—they need support with childcare, meals, and daily living expenses. The family includes Chris, her husband; Rowan, their first child; Isla, their baby; and both sets of grandparents—Steve and Jill, and Cheryl and David. They are staying at a nearby hotel and need help covering ongoing costs and care.

Asking for money can feel awkward, but direct financial support is the most helpful and immediate way to assist. We trust Chris to know what his family needs most, and contributions that ease even one worry during this overwhelming crisis can make a meaningful difference. Funds can be used for everything from groceries to warm socks for Kelsey as she recovers. Gift cards and flowers are thoughtful, but financial support during this emergency is the kindest and most practical way to help. Please give what you can.
