Hi, my name is Kayden Xavier Coleman. Many of you know me as a proud Black transgender man, a father, and an advocate for my community. Today, I’m reaching out with one of the hardest asks I’ve ever had to make — I need help to fight for my daughter, Jurnee.
Jurnee is only 5 years old, and right now, I am being wrongfully kept from her. In Texas, when no custody order is in place, both parents are supposed to have equal rights to their child. Unfortunately, that’s not what’s happening in my case.
Earlier this year, I was granted a protective order after an incident of domestic violence. That order was granted by default when the other party chose not to appear in court, but I still presented my evidence to the judge. Since then, instead of working together to co-parent, I have faced ongoing interference with my relationship with Jurnee.
I recently retained a new attorney who truly believes in my case and has agreed to represent me for a reduced rate of $200 per hour. Even with this generosity, the reality is that custody cases in Texas are expensive — I am expected to need $11,000 to $21,000 to see this case through.
I am doing everything I can to cover what I can personally, but I need help to ensure I can keep fighting for my rights as a father and, most importantly, for Jurnee’s right to have both of her parents in her life.
If you’re able to contribute, any amount helps — no matter how small. If you can’t give financially, sharing this campaign with your networks would mean the world to me.
Thank you for standing with me, for supporting my fight to be in my daughter’s life, and for believing in the love between a parent and a child.
With gratitude,
Kayden
