Support Kathia's Selfless Mother’s Care

Hello friends, my name is Kathia. My mother, the matriarch of our family, has been diagnosed with significant and chronic health issues for the past 5 months. To help her get the care that she needs is the reason why I'm writing this as my last resource. My sister and I have been using all resources available to us, including the private health system, which is very expensive in Costa Rica. The Costa Rican socialized health care has a long wait (years) for appointments and does not have the medications and treatment services that she requires. My sister and her family live with my mother and care for her daily needs.

With the kindness of a few giving friends, I have been able to provide significant financial support up until now. I struggle with asking for help and I have hesitated to ask this. Yet, after my mami was in the ER yesterday, I realized I needed to lean on community. She needs ongoing appointments, tests, and medications for the long term, which are more than what we can afford even though I live in the US. I run a single-parent household and barely make ends meet even with picking up extra jobs.

My mami is 73; she raised us as a single mom, working so hard from coffee planting and collecting to sugar cane fieldwork and several different jobs. She is a seamstress now which she hasn't been able to do since she has been sick. She has dedicated her life to helping people. She is truly a kind person. She is that neighbor who cares regardless if she has to get up in the middle of the night to help. She feeds the hungry and cares for all regardless of what she has. She loves to laugh and likes when people make her laugh. She has lived a humble life and is happy with very little.
