On January 10th, my 10-year-old student, Karla, and her father, Arnoldo, were taken by Customs & Border Patrol (CBP).
In one moment, a child was separated from her community and a family lost the person who was holding everything together. Her father was the primary breadwinner for their family. That essential support has now been abruptly cut off.
They were abducted by CBP despite having an Asylum hearing scheduled and with no criminal charges.
This fundraiser is to help Karla’s family meet urgent and immediate needs during this crisis.
How your donation will help
Funds raised will go directly toward:
• Legal & monetary support while in detention
• Travel and coordination costs to support the family leaving the Texas detention center
• Emergency family assistance, including food, rent, and basic living expenses
Why this matters
This past week, countless folks who know Karla have been sharing incredible stories about how Karla has touched their lives. She is a brilliant, caring, and profoundly kind child.
There is a vast coalition of support from her school community, neighbors, friends, and caring strangers who are collaborating to support Karla and her family in every way that we can. This GoFundMe is one piece of said network, to be able to rapidly support her family financially.
Karla’s story is not an isolated one. Families across Spokane are living with the fear that a normal day can end in separation. Supporting Karla’s family is one way to show that our community will not look away when our neighbors and children are harmed.
