Long before they became firefighters, my sister, Maddy, and my brother-in-law, Junior, were the kind of people who always showed up when someone needed help. Whether it was supporting family, lending a hand to friends, or volunteering in their community, serving others has always been at the heart of who they are.

That calling eventually led them both to careers in the fire service. Today, my sister proudly serves with the Phoenix Fire Department, and her husband serves with the Surprise Fire-Medical Department. Every shift, they put on their uniforms ready to help complete strangers through some of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Now, they are facing a life-changing challenge of their own.

My sister is preparing to donate one of her kidneys to her husband in a remarkable act of love and selflessness. While this transplant offers hope for a healthier future, it also means both of them will be away from work as they recover from major surgery.
