Four years ago, my mom, Joy Lyn, had an accident at work that resulted in a shattered elbow that was so disabling I had to move back home to take care of her. What was supposed to be a temporary stay extended into years as it became obvious that even though she was healing physically, her mental condition was rapidly deteriorating. She was diagnosed with a type of rapid-onset dementia/Alzheimer's, and it quickly progressed to the point where she became completely non-verbal and non-responsive. She is now in hospice care.
We were able to financially cope via a combination of Medi-Cal/Medicare assistance, her savings, her social security, and my job. However, as her care has stretched on, bills have become increasingly difficult to meet. Since March and the massive cuts to social security's funding and staffing, social security has missed three months of payments. They were sent to the incorrect bank account, and despite multiple pleas through official channels and fraud reports, social security has told us that she may never get those funds back, and the fraud investigation may take months to years. In addition, I have to check with social security frequently to make sure they are sending it to the correct account, as they keep changing it back to the wrong account, and I just have to hope that there is enough time for them to redirect it before the funds go out. This has been incredibly financially and emotionally straining.
Because of this, I am asking for an amount equivalent to the amount social security failed to provide her, $8,487. Although her total bills are more than that, I know everyone is stretched thin right now, and I am only asking for the amount that she should have received but never did.
