Hello, my name is Jose Vazquez, and I’m reaching out on behalf of my parents, who are navigating a difficult and unexpected situation. Over the weekend, a fire broke out in a neighboring unit and spread to my parents’ home, causing significant damage. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the emotional and financial strain has been heavy.

The fire damaged the entire exterior wall of their home, and due to extensive smoke and soot exposure, they now have to replace all of their furniture, beds, clothing, and essential items. Interior components like drywall, carpet, insulation, and structural elements will also need to be replaced to make the home safe again.

One of the most challenging parts is that the neighbor responsible for the fire does not have insurance, meaning my parents are left to cover all costs out of pocket. The official cause of the fire is still under investigation, but the damage has already been done and recovery can’t wait.

I work in public health and mental health navigation, supporting underserved communities across the Bay Area. I’ve always believed in showing up for others during times of crisis — and right now, it’s my own family that’s in need of support. My parents are long-standing members of their community and have always extended help where they could. This time, we’re asking for help in return.

Hola, mi nombre es Jose Vazquez y escribo en nombre de mis papás, quienes están pasando por una situación muy difícil. Este fin de semana, un incendio comenzó en la casa de un vecino y se extendió hasta la de mis papás, causando daños graves. Gracias a Dios, nadie salió lastimado, pero el impacto emocional y económico ha sido muy fuerte.

El fuego dañó por completo una de las paredes exteriores de la casa, y por el humo y el hollín, ahora se necesita reemplazar todos los muebles, camas, ropa y artículos personales. También es necesario cambiar cosas del interior como el yeso de las paredes, la alfombra, el aislamiento y parte de la estructura para que la casa vuelva a ser segura.

Lo más complicado es que el vecino que causó el incendio no tiene seguro, lo que significa que todos los gastos tendrán que salir del bolsillo de mis papás. Aunque la causa exacta del incendio aún está bajo investigación, los daños ya están hechos y la recuperación no puede esperar.

Yo trabajo en salud pública y apoyo a comunidades en situaciones difíciles en el Área de la Bahía. Siempre he creído en estar presente para los demás en momentos complicados — y ahora es mi familia la que necesita ese apoyo. Mis papás siempre han sido personas trabajadoras, solidarias, y han ayudado a quien han podido. Hoy nos toca pedir ayuda a nosotros.
