Hi, I’m John Burns and I am in the Cadet program at Maugansville Fire Department working on my Eagle Scout project. I want to do my Eagle Scout project to help the firehouse in my community.
I am making a small-scale obstacle course for younger kids to use. There will be a house with windows and fake wooden fires with red, orange, and yellow paint that will fall inwards on impact. The kids can throw beanbags at it so the fire falls to simulate putting fires out. The second obstacle will be a hammer sled. The hammer sled is a little brick of material that you hit with a hammer, and it slides back until it gets to the end of the slide. This simulates using different tools that firefighters use on the job. The last obstacle will be a small ladder for the kids to carry 10 feet. This will simulate the endurance and strength needed by firefighters when quickly moving equipment during an emergency.
This will be helpful to the community and the local fire department because when kids do the obstacle course, it will show some of the physical challenges that firefighters go through. They might like what they’re doing and want to do it more, so they could join a cadet program and eventually become a firefighter. The obstacle course will serve as both a community engagement activity and a recruitment tool. It will cost about $600.
